- Assessment FOR Learning: formative assessment that occurs during instruction to be used in the service of the next stage of learning.
- Assessment AS Learning: assessment that occurs when students personally monitor what they are learning and use the feedback from this monitoring to make adjustments, adaptations, and even major changes in what they understand.

Assessment tools and strategies
- Observations: keeping track of student understanding of concepts
- Conversations: speaking with students casually about their understandings and asking questions, and conferences or formal interviews
- Performance Tasks: meaningful and purposeful taks designed for students to perform, create of produce something that showcases their understanding
- Rubrics: tools for assessing performance tasks that identifies the criteria that describes the different levels of achievement
- Self-Assessment: journals and portfolios that students use to reflect on their own learning, performance and set goals for future learning
The Self Assessment Continuum:
A framework that helps to guide teachers and students by showing that all assessment practices are inter-related. Learning Goals are a statement that highlights the concept or understanding that students are working on acquiring. The success criteria are the specific indicators that tell them they are on the right track. |
