My name is Martina Walton. I am currently a Grade 5 teacher in Oshawa, Ontario. My education background includes an undergraduate English Literature degree from Western University and a Bachelor of Education from the University of Alberta, Elementary Generalist. I've taken the English Intermediate AQ from OISE and am now interested in obtaining my Math specialist. I have taught a variety of grades and subjects over the past 8 years. I began teaching Grade 8/9 English in Edmonton however, since moving to Ontario, I have taught primary and junior. I have found that I am especially interested in how students learn Math and have developed a (dare I say) obsession over making Math exciting! I have been fortunate to take part in a board initiative Student Work Study project that involves planning and executing rich tasks and 3-part lessons. I've observed all manner of math instruction - worksheets, booklets, text book chapter by chapter, bansho, 3-part lessons, investigation…. This year I started an online course with Jo Boaler and I have to say I am loving everything math. I hope to hone my planning skills and to really understand the math curriculum in order to increase student engagement within my teaching practice.
