Grade 5: Measurement
Specific Expectation:
"In 1534, Jacques Cartier departed France in search of passage to the Orient. He spent 20 days at sea before he finally came upon land and met with the Mik'Maq. He spent time with these First Nations people before carrying on down the coast and meeting up with the Haudenosaunee. He learned of a passage they used to go fishing and hunting. He thought that could be the route to the Orient. He decided to return home to France to tell about all that he had seen.
If Cartier spent 21 days at sea, another month (June) exploring and meeting with indigenous people, and then 4 weeks on his return voyage. About how long was he away from France? Can you express this in months, weeks, days, hours, and minutes? Show your work."
Teaching Strategy/Method: Students should use the Problem Solving model to work through this question with a focus on communicating ideas, discussing with their math partner, using a variety of strategies or computations to analyze the data. Show how they have carried out a plan, and describe how their solution was reached. Students can choose which way to communicate the length of time elapsed during the voyage; and could use a variety of manipulatives in order to help them calculate. Ask students to share their thinking with the class to explain how they came to a conclusion.
**Curriculum Connection: Social Studies, Grade 5
